Why thar is a desert? (Question from ICSE board examination 2017 class 10th)

Thar is known to be a desert area because of lower water resource which lead to less precipitation.
Moreover the Aravaili hills present near the Thar desert obstructs the rainfall of south west monsoon.
This causes low rainfall in these region.
