halo means salt gen means form..that is halogen means salt former...and they form salt like nacl etc...
therefore..they are halogen

group  17 elements in modern periodic table is known as halogen family.halogen is greek word which means 'salt producing'.they are called as halogen as they contains fluorine,chlorine,bromine,iodine and astanine,they are non metals.they reacts with metal to  form compounds called salts.
                  FOR EXAMPLE:2Na+Cl
→NaCl(s)
