Why the air used to burn the sulphur must be as clean as possible?

If you burn Sulphur in presence of air sulphur will reacts with atmospheric oxygen to form sulphur dioxide and in excess of oxygen it can form sulphur trioxide. If sulphur has two valency and oxygen has also two, then why they do not form sulphur monoxide?
