A reason in general that insects are not much bigger is that when you’re small you can use diffusion a lot more to move fluids and oxygen around for you. To get much bigger they would have to evolve a circulatory system (heart + some kind of blood vessels) and lungs, then they wouldn’t be much like ants any more!
