Australia is too far north, and a lot of it is in the same zone as the great deserts in the norther hemisphere.  Also, there is no seasonal snow melt-water to feed such a lake or lakes.  And Australia does not have the benefit of high mountain ranges to create the rivers that would feed the lakes.
