why the base of dam is broad

Dams are made broader at the base than at the top to withstand the pressure of the water behind it. As the pressure is greatest at the bottom, thedam must be made thickest at itsbase.

Hey mate here is ur ans

in dams the water is stored in great height
the lateral pressure of this high liquid column may break the base as pressure increases with depth
so to withstand the pressure the base and walls are made broader to increase the area in contact
pressure is inversely proportional to the area of contact so pressure gets reduced preventing the dam from bursting in general
