He had the habit of keeping the doors and windows of his open unbolted for the last 30 years lest any needy, hungry, or tired passerby should need some help. These unbolted doors and windows proved to be a turning point in the convict’s life. If the convict would find them locked, he would perhaps not enter the Bishop’s house, and perhaps would miss the opportunity of being reformed.

The Bishop has a habit of leaving his door and windows open because he is a very generous person. This can be seen by the way he has donated all his belongings except the silver candlesticks given to him by his mother. He also loves to help people in need and distress. To extend all possible help to the ailing, he keeps the door and windows open so that they can walk in whenever they want to.
