Why the concentration of h2so4 falls during the working of lead accumulator?

hello mate.

The reactions involved in the charging and discharging process should be studied to understand this.

The lead-acid cell contains these:

PbO2 on spongy Pb plate in the anode, Pb plate in the cathode and H2SO4 as electrolyte.

The reaction while discharging involves two steps.

PbO2 + 2H+ = PbO + H2O ( 2e are taken by the H+ ions from th anode)

PbO +H2SO4 = PbSO4 + H2O

In both the steps H2O is produced and in the second step H2SO4 reacts to form PbSO4. So Concentration of H2SO4 decreases.

Battery stratification is caused when the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte mixture separates from the water and begins to concentrate at the bottom of the battery. This increased concentration of acid increases the formation of lead sulfate (sulfation).
