Why the conch shell placed in a bag of rice rises?

There are many theories to why the conch shells move up when placed deep inside a bag of rice.

One reason may be that the fine grains of rice may behave like a fluid medium and when the conch is placed on the inverted side, the air gets trapped in it and it floats up.

Another reason may be the due to action of electro-static effects, which causes a difference in the surface tension and densities of the rice grains and the conch, pushing the conch up.

However, there are many articles suggesting that this is only a scam in Eastern India.

gillbart: Air enters through the rice grains due to atmospheric pressure. This occurs due 2 the low pressure formed inside the rice bag on being filled up. Thus keeps entering into the conch shell continuously, and thereby keeps lifting it upward. Matter of fact, a part of Bernoulli's floatation comes into picture here, in that the LIFT (L) of conch shell becomes greater than the WEIGHT (W) of the shell so that it keeps going upward.

The rice grains act like sand which shift towards the air space in the conch. The air trapped in the conch lifts the conch up in order to escape, thus it moves up.
