their are plenty of possible reasons for it

it is estimated a meteor collided from the earth which resulted in dusonaurs' extinction
it is also said that many volcanic eruptions or large floods took place

The extinction wiped out the dinosaurs while most mammals,turtles,crocodiles,salamanders,and frogs survived.Birds escaped. So did snail,bivalves,sea starts(starfish),and utchins.Even Hardy plants able to weather climate extremes fared okay
