  • The direction of an electric current is by convention the direction in which a positive charge would move. Thus, the current in the external circuit is directed away from the positive terminal and toward the negative terminal of the battery. Electrons would actually move through the wires in the opposite direction.

Answer:

The positive sign for current corresponds to the direction a positive charge would move. In metal wires, current is carried by negatively charged electrons, so the positive current arrow points in the opposite direction the electrons move.

Basically there is a current of electrons that flows from negative terminal to the positive terminal of a battery through the external Cicuit. But the current is assumed to be flow of positive charges which flow oppsite to electrons from positive to negative terminal.

Moreover, it is clear that inside a batter current flows due to both positive and negative ions. So current of positive ions from positive terminal to negative terminal migh be called current.
