The lithosphere is broken up into plates called as tectonic plates. On Earth, there are seven or eight major plates and many minor plates.

Plate tectonics is a scientific theory which says that earths lithosphere is composed of distinct tectonic plates, these plates are in motion and have resulted in the drift of continents away from each other and formation of some mountains like Himalayas.
