The Earth is round because of the gravitational acceleration of the earth . The Earth's gravity pulls it equally from all sides. Gravity pulls from the center to the edges like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. This makes the overall shape of the Earth a sphere which in 2 D looks like a circle.
