The East Coast and West Coast of the US both have considerably diverse climates and ecosystems. Ocean currents and sea surface temperatures are primarily responsible for moisture content and rainfall amounts on each coast. On the West Coast, cold air and water come down from the Northern Pacific. Cold air often results in dryer conditions because it prevents surface moisture from rising, condensing, and producing rainfall. The East Coast, however, receives warm, wet air from the equatorial Atlantic via the Gulf Stream, resulting in sometimes very humid conditions.
