Because said machines have to operate in the physical world with constraints caused by the laws of physics. It’s not possible to do useful work without encountering some of these issues. The mains ones are:

Heat lost from the system

Friction (including air resistance)

Electrical resistance

because here are several reasons :-

  • Since a machine does not contain a source of energy,

  • nor can it store energy, from conservation of energy the power output of a machine can never be greater than its input,

  • so the efficiency can never be greater than 1.
