Explanation:

First, the question is of chemistry category, but you have put it in physics.

this is because of the higher energy state of 4d orbital. 5s orbital have less energy than 4d. So, the electrons go for 5s orbital instead of 4d orbital.

Explanation:

Energy of orbitals is given on the basis of (n+l) rule, where 'n'= principal quantum number and 'l'= magnetic quantum no. for a given orbital.

Here lower the value of (n+l) for an orbital the lower is it's energy. If two orbitals have the same value of (n+l),the orbital with lower value of n will have the lower energy.

For example, the energy of orbital

1s = 1+0=1(n=1,l=0)

2s=2+0=2

2p=2+1=3

3s=3+0=3

Here both 2p and 3s have the same value of (n+l) but as the 2p orbital has lower value of n therefore it has lower energy.

similarly in the case of

4d= 4+2=6

and

5s=5+0=5

here n+l value is smaller for 5s therefore it has lower energy and electron after being filled in 4p orbital enters in 5s instead of 4d orbital.
