Actually,, in higher animals, the embryonic cells undergo mitosis, not meiosis. Meiosis only occurs during gamete formation in higher animals . This is done to retain same no of chromosomes in the successive generations. Once 2 haploid gametes fuse, a diploid zygote is formed, thus the species is maintained as this restores the chromosome no. The zygote undergoes mitotic divisions, to form embryo. The embryo also undertakes mitosis to develop into a foetus.
