Why the esophagus is not the common passage of both food and air

the food enters the upper portion of Alimentary Canal that is the mouse and then passes through the pharynx which is the common passage of both food and air then the pharynx get divided into two parts by a glottis and is covered by a flap like structure which covers the glottis is known as epiglottis.... and is followed by the oesophagus (food pipe) and larynx( wind pipe ) separately
