Both extremists and radicals have similar ideologies.

Extremism is usually related to political or religious beliefs. When a person believes in extreme political or religious ideologies, he is referred to as an extremist. An extremist is someone who advocates extreme actions – violent or non-violent, to achieve his or her ideologies.

Extremists are also known as ‘radicals’ whose aim is complete and thorough political or social change. They are usually found to support a political party believing in extremism.

EXPLANATION:

Extremist leaders are the ones who are extreme in their thinking, behavior and line of action. They are not in middle of any ideology. They are in clear state of mind for whether they support a matter or not.

Hence, their activities can result into both - violence or non-violence to prove themselves. These leaders were also called radicals as the extreme thinking leads to actions which can result into major change in society or in politics or in any field.
