A filament is made up of a substance having a high melting point because a bulb lights up heating the filament. The heated filament is the source of light and if the melting point of filament's substance is low, it may melt.

Pure tungsten has some amazing properties including the highest melting point (3695 K), lowest vapor pressure, and greatest tensile strength out of all the metals. Because of these properties it is the most commonly used material for light bulb filaments.

Answer:

when current flow through the filament, it becomes white hot and emit light. It has high melting point so that when current flow through it does not melt easily.
