During fire, a lot of toxic gases are produced like carbon monoxide. Thus the gas masks used by the firemen are the devices which contain a layer of charcoal( a very good adsorbent) so that the poisonous gases present in the atmosphere are preferentially adsorbed and the air for their breathing is purified.
