The grandmother always accompanied the author to school because school was attached to temple.The priest would double up as teacher and priest and teach them lessons of god and scriptures.When they would come back grandmother would feed dogs stale chappatis.

The grandmother accompanied the narrator for two reasons.
1. The first was the school was attached to a temple. As the narrator learnt his lessons from the temple priest, she sat in the temple reading the scriptures.
2. The narrator at that time was quite young. She accompanied him for security purposes. As there were many stray dogs, they might pose threat to the narrator.
