Why the great indian desert and the region to the east of the western ghats are often said to be the rain shadow region?

They are said to be rain shadow region because they lie behind or beside the mountains due to which the clouds containing the rain water change their direction and move ahead without raining there.
So, due to this rain does not occur there and they remain rain shadowed.
