Heat energy is required to melt a solid because The energy applied at melting point to the solid helps the molecules of solid to overcome the intermolecular force and break the bonds to create intermolecular space.
Since, Liquids have more intermolecular space. THE ENERGY SO APPLIED IS KNOWN AS LATENT HEAT OF FUSION.

Heat energy is required to change the state of solid into its liguid state...

This heat energy given to solid is called Thermal energy...

Firstly we should know that there is a strong force of attraction between the particles of solid and the distance between the particles is so Small...particle of Solid tighlty held each other..

If the distance between the particle increases, force of attraction between the particles becomes weaker...
This leads to change in state of any matter...

When Solid is being heated , Distance between the particles increases due to which force of attraction between the particles become weaker and as a result state of solid starts changing into its liquid state..

Potential energy is that energy posses by body when there is a change in position or location of a particles...means If there is sepration between two particles or bodies then there must be a potential energy posses by these bodies because there is some agent who actually do so some work to seprate the particles from their original position or location and loses its energy to do the same job....this loss of energy further transfer to the objects and become its potential energy...

So when there is change in state...there is a change in potential energy...

for example
if ice melt and changes to water....it means water has greater potential energy than ice...because the distance between the the particles in water more than that of solid(ice)...
If the water gets boiled and converted into steam then potential energy of steam is greater than water...

So increase in potential energy is the state change of a solid and vice versa...

and if temp increases the kinetic energy of a particle increases and vice versa..
