the maximum height of a mountain is 10km.. this is because of the following reason:
the maximum shearing strain that can be experienced by a rock is 3 x 107. so we can say that
F/A = hpg (p is rho)
ie 3 x 107 = h x 3 x 103 x 10
=> h = 10000m = 10km
hope it helps....
