Himalayas are called young fold mountains because they began forming in the late Cretaceous - Tertiary period and continue to increase in elevation even today. They are called fold mountains due to the compressive forces involved in the collision of the two continental plates - the Asian and the Indian / Australian.

Features:

(i) It is the northern most and continuous range.

(ii) It consists of lofty peaks like Nanda Devi and Kanchenjunga.

(iii) It is snow-bound and consists of glaciers.

(iv) It is symmetrical in nature and is composed of granite.
