HERE IS YOUR ANSWER
I don’t know how or why we developed this way, but humans seldom have more than one baby at a time. It seems that the larger the mammal, the bigger the baby in proportion to mom.
Big cats usually have two, although a single or a triple is common. They have enough nipples to nurse more than one. Whales, elephants, and humans normaly have only one baby at a time, and their babies stay with them for years before they mature. Horses, cows, ungulates, sheep and other prey animals usually have one offspring at a time. Twins are not unknown. All of these babies are able to walk within hours of birth, and they will stay with their mothers for a relatively long period. The size of the offspring often relates to the intelligence of the baby, and the helplessness at birth goes along with the length of the nurturing period. Therefore, a very helpless infant will need a longer mothering period but has more potential intelligence that is nurtured by the mother.
The theory is that animals have multiple births because having several in a litter gives better odds that at least one of them will survive to adulthood.
