why the king of mahajanapadas built Fort

The king of Mahajanpads build forts them for protect people from other enemy kings,but sometimes it is build to show prosperity and power. Forts where built because people were afraid of attacks from the the other kings and needed protection it was also likely that some rulers wanted to show how rich and powerfull they were by building buildings really large , tall, and impressive walls around the cities  in this way , the land and the people living inside the fortified area  could be  controlled more easily by the kings.
