The leguminous plants have certain bacteria which convert atmospheric nitrogen into useful nitrogen compounds.
They have bacteria like rhizobium on their nodules which are on the roots of the plant. The bacteria on the nodules takes nitrogen from the air and fixes it into the soil, so that the plants that require nitrogen can use it.
Planting leguminous plants also makes the soil more fertile.
