Why the level of mercury should change at all when the bulb of the thermometer is brought in contract of other objects

As mercury is though a metal but liquid at room temperature that is why it is used in thermometer because mercury rises up as the temperature increase. It is because a liquid changes its volume relative to its temperature and should bechanged at all when the bulb of the thermometer is in contact with another object.
