Magnesium ribbon is cleaned by rubbing it with sand paper as it's reactive and forms layer of magnesium oxide in open. Hence to remove it this layer we use sand paper

The magnesium ribbon is cleared by rubbing sand paper before burning because magnesium ribbon has a layer of sulphides and oxides over it which prevents it from burning. For. magnesium ribbon to burn with dazzling flame we need to clean it by rubbing sand paper.
