why the methane doesnot undergoes nitration

Aromatic compounds have a cloud of electrons above and below the plane of the molecule, known as pi electrons. These provide the area of negative charge density necessary to attract electrophiles such as the nitronium ion, and thus nitration is possible. Aliphatic compounds do not have this cloud of pi electrons, and therefore there is no attraction to the nitronium ion and no reaction takes place.
