Because of their notoriety they are called decomposers. Microorganism do this to gain nutrition as humans these organisms also need a source of nutrition. Generally they depend on simpler sources. But there are some who have evolved to utilise more complex biomolecules. Thus decomposing wood,paper, anything that is biodegradeable.
