the narrator's mother was so innocent that she could not see the rude and cunning nature of mrs. dorling. she behaved in a well mannered way when she came to their house to take the precious things......her mother thought that she was being so nice as after all she was taking care of their precious things but later on mrs. Dorling changed her behaviour just as a chameleon changes its colour. she didn't even open the door when the narrator went to her......she was rude and even told her to come some other time. above all she was using the precious things for her own day to day purpose.
