The number of trophic levels in the food chain is limited due to the law of energy transfer in the trophic levels.
10% of the energy received by plants is transferred to the first trophic level animals i.e., herbivores. The rest 90% is lost in the form of heat.
Out of this energy, 10% of it is transferred to the carnivores.
As the number of trophic level increases, the energy received becomes lesser. Therefore the number of trophic level in the food chain is limited.
