Why the north pole of the earth as a magnetic bar lies in the geographic south and vice versa?
Answers
Answer:Compasses were being used for navigation long before magnetism was being understood. The end of the the compass that pointed toward the North Star was labeled ’N’ to distinguish it from the other end that pointed down south.
Once the ‘Magnetic Field’ was invented to help us understand magnetism, it was reasonable to say that the direction of the magnetic field lines was the same as the direction that the compass points.
Herein lies the rub. When we investigate the magnetic field of a bar magnet, we ‘discover’ that the magnetic field lines point OUT, away from the ’N’ end of a bar magnet and the lines flow IN at the ‘S’ end of a bar magnet. It’s a natural fact that opposites attract so - - -either the Earth’s magnetic ends are labeled wrong - OR - the end of every compass and bar magnet is labeled ‘wrong’.
Science is (somewhat) democratic and the Scientists realized that there are WAY more magnets and compasses in the world than there are Worlds - so the World was declared to be labeled ‘wrong’ and all the bar magnets and compasses are labeled ‘correctly’.
