The number of trophic levels afe limited because the amount of energy that transfers from one trophic level to next trophic level is only 10% of previous one.
For ex. suppose plants trap 4000J pf sun energy. Herbivore will get 400J. Primary carnivore will get 40 jule and then the secondary carnivore has onlg 4J which is not sufficient for survival

The number of trophic level in food chain is limited because at each trophic level a large amount of energy is being utilized for the maintenance of organism and lost as heat.


The energy keep on decreasing at each trophic level and only 10% of the energy is being passed to the next level.
