they do not die but they do not really get freedom. The reason is that people thought that the gods would feel offended if the wife of a dead person get the freedom but not them. The women were supposed to stay in grief

Believes that husband is the light of the house and women is only meant for cooking the food , and have to feed her children and husband. the women is permitted to the kitchen that's it . In olden days, women ( girls ) are not even allowed to step out of the house . there is no equality those days , women is discriminated by the men . In INDIA at older periods, child marriages are done by the people , when the girl's age is 6 approx and the boy's age is some 60 , like that . so husband dies fast . when the husband dies then they treated the wife ( widow ) as a statue, they ( uncle / aunt ) will torcher these widows like any thing . by this, some people thought that we can save women for these evils . they supposed were to kill the women . And they started to kill the wife when her husband dies , she have to die along with him.it is called as " sathi ".
