People of kudankulam started agitation against the government

Explanation:

  • Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNP), is the biggest  nuclear power station in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Construction on the plant started  on 31st March 2002, however it faced many delays because of opposition from local villagers
  • The 13,000-crore Indo-Russian JV has been vehemently opposed by villagers in Nagercoil, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts, especially  after the Fukushima nuclear disaster  that took place in Japan, which was one of the most severe nuclear accident
  • In 2011, thousands demonstrated against it in the aftermath of a Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster and worried that  in the event of a nuclear disaster, it may not be possible to evacuate people immediately. The protestors stated that since nuclear power plants are prone to natural disasters and no one cannot predict their happening/occurrence,  they fear that the govt cannot effectively deal with a nuclear disaster
  • Moreover in setting up the plant villages feared they would be displaced  along with having to deal with radioactive poison. The protestors fear the KKNPP is going to dump the coolant water and low-grade waste into the sea, that will have  a severe  impact on the production and catching of fish. The fisheries industry will be undermined, and this will push the fishermen into deeper and more poverty, thus affecting food security for the whole of South Tamil Nadu
  • Further the protestors state that even when the KKNP projects operate normally without any accidents/incidents, the plant would emit other harmful chemical and radioactive particles into the air, crops, land, sea, cattle, ground water, and seafood. As it is the southern coastal belt is has high prevalence of cancer, down syndrome, mental retardation, and defective births because of government and private sand-sea mining for rare minerals together with thorium. The KKNP project would add several more distresses to the already suffering people.
