Why the presence of algae in water results in the reduction of oxygen?

If the concentration of algae increases in the water body, then it causes depletion of oxygen in the water. This algal bloom covers the water surface, secrete toxins and reduce oxygen content of water. Oxygen deficiency may cause the death of aquatic animals.
