Why the prounciation is different in put and but ?

Both the first consonant and the vowel are different. The words are pronounced something like [pʰʊt] and [bʌt] in British English, and [pʰʊʔ] and [bəʔ] in American English. ... In British English, the vowel in put [ʊ] is rounded, and it is closer (pronounced with less opening in the mouth) than the vowel in but [ʌ].
