Pieces of pumice stone are added to water before heating to avoid bumping of liquid when the temperature rises. When water boils it releases energy as bubbles. If the bubbles do not form, the water can super heat and possibly explode.

Pumice stones are added to the liquid to be boiled to avoid bumping of liquidwhen the temperature is raised. These pumice stones have fine pores within themselves which provide space for the air. This air makes a little bubble in the liquid which can facilitate the boiling process.
