The shadow is formed when some opaque object blocks light rays i.e. doesn't allow the light to go to the other side so since no light gets reflected so the shadow appears to be black.

If there is a single light source, and the shadow is being cast by an opaque object between that lignt and the surface, the shadow will beblack because no light is reaching the surface where it is blocked by the object.
