the size of atom doesn't decrease regularly due to the reason of lanthanide contraction .there is slightly increase or or almost no increase in atomic radius from 5th to 6th period in transition metal .

Size of atom does not decrease regularly in a period.

  • As we move from one period to another period in the periodic table, it may be noticed that the size of the atom does not decrease regularly.
  • It is because of the protons and electrons present in the atom of the elements.
  • The size of the elements of one period increases due to increase in the number of protons.
  • Apart from proton addition, the number of electron present in the outermost shell also increases in elements as we move from left to right in a period.
  • This accounts for irregularity in the reduction of atomic size from one period to another.
