As you move across a period, the atomic number of the elements increases by 1.

And because atomic number is determined by the number of protons in the nucleus,

it means that number of protons increases as you move across the period.

Due to this increase, there is more electrostatic attraction between the protons and the electrons in the atom.

This brings the valence electrons closer to the centre of the atom, thus decreasing the atomic radius.
