During sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere because they are very close to the horizon. Therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away. Most of the red light, which is the least scattered, enters our eyes. Hence, the sun and the sky appearred.

Hey mate !!
At d time of sunrise and sunset, d light from sun has to travel d longest distance of atmosphere to reach d observer. Since d blue light of short wavelength is scattered more, much of it is lost, while d red light of long wavelength is scattered a little, so it is not much lost. Thus blue light is almost absent in sunlight reaching d observer and only d red light reaches us. As a result the sun and d region near by it, is seen red.
