Because blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.

sky appears blue because the sunlight is made up of 7 coloured lights (VIBGYOR) . when the sunlight enters the surface of the earth , most of the shorter wavelength lights (blue coloured lights ) get scattered easily by the dust particles present in the atmosphere and gives a blue appearance .while most of the longer wave length lights (red coloured) do not scatter much easily .So the sky appears to be blue.
