Why the speed increases when acceleration and velocity are both negative?

Explanation:

Speed is magnitude of velocity and it is a scalar quantity where as acceleration is a vector quantity,hence speed of particle can increase as acceleration decreases. If the acceleration is along the velocity, even if both acceleration and velocity are negative, magnitude of velocity or speed will increase.
