During sunrise and sunset the sun is far away from us .so the sun rays has to travel a larger their part of atmosphere . so,any light other than red is scattered away. (red colour has the least refractive index)so,the least scattered red light enters our eyes.so,the sun and the sky seems red at those times.

Hope this helps you..!

According to Rayleigh law, the the intensity of scattered rays varies inversely as the fourth power of its wavelength.
Sunlight consists of seven colours. of these, red has the maximum wavelength.
During sunset and sunrise the rays have to Travell last part of the atmosphere as they are close to The Horizon.

Therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away. most of the red rays, which is least scattered enters our eyes.
Hence the sky and the sun appears to be red at the time of Sunrise and Sunset.
