Why the Sun appear reddish at the time of Sunrise and Sunset?
Answers
It happens due to refraction of light. During sun rise and sun set we feel that the sun is close to the earth’s surface but actually its far than we think. Therefore, when the sun is near the horizon the light has to travel a large distance to reach our eyes, when light travels it gets refracted through the different layers of the earth which makes the sun look red as well as elliptical. And because of the same reason the sun is seen two minutes earlier before rise and sets two minutes later than the actual position of the sun.
During sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere because they are very close to the horizon. Therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away. Most of the red light, which is the least scattered, enters our eyes. Hence, the sun and the sky appear red.
